Patrick Mahomes gives damning verdict on Super Bowl hopes after struggling Chiefs’ latest loss

Patrick Mahomes delivered a sobering assessment of the Chiefs following their loss to the Jaguars on Monday, saying Kansas City has ‘lost too many games already.’

The defending AFC champions slipped to 2-3 on the year following the 31-28 loss to Jacksonville, which included a disastrous pick six from Mahomes.

And with the Chiefs – who didn’t lose their third game last season until the Super Bowl – already losing footing in the playoff race, Mahomes had some harsh words for his team following their latest defeat.

‘We’ve got to be better. We’ve lost too many games already,’ he told reporters, via ESPN.

He added: ‘We have the guys and we’ve executed at certain points in games and looked really good, but we crush ourselves with penalties and mistakes.

‘We’ve done that to ourselves all season long. It’s been one guy here or there. In this league, it’s so close that those [moments] change games.’

Mahomes and Kansas City are now 2-3 after their dramatic defeat at EverBank Stadium

With the game tied in the third quarter at 14 all and the Chiefs at Jacksonville’s one-yard-line, Mahomes was intercepted by Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd – who went 99 yards the other way for a touchdown.

A late Kareem Hunt touchdown saw Kansas City regain the lead, though Trevor Lawrence and the Jags were able to drive 60 yards down the field before he scrambled in for the game-winning touchdown with just 23 seconds remaining.

Kansas City also held a 14-point lead in the second quarter.

Mahomes ultimately finished the night with 318 passing yards and a touchdown (in addition to his interception).

Lawrence, meanwhile, passed for 221 yards and totaled three touchdowns (two on the ground) while throwing an interception as well.

The defeat is the latest disappointing result for the Chiefs this season following losses to the Chargers and Eagles.

And they’ve already found themselves in a bit of a hole after making the Super Bowl in three consecutive seasons, as they’re currently third in the AFC West.

Both the Chargers and Broncos are ahead of them at 3-2, with two matchups still to come against Denver and one more against the Chargers on December 14.

Kansas City will face another tough matchup next week when they welcome the Lions to town.
