Packers hand Christian Watson one-year, $13.25m contract extension even though he’s out with a torn ACL

The Green Bay Packers have handed Christian Watson a one-year contract extension worth $13.25million, even though he’s currently out with a torn ACL.

The wide receiver is currently on the NFL’s physically unable to perform list after suffering the knee injury at the end of last season.

The 2022 second-round draft pick had just started the final year of his rookie deal and the Packers have now made the decision to lock him down for at least another season.

Watson suffered a torn ACL in a Week 18 loss to the Chicago Bears in January and his availability has been a big issue throughout his NFL career so far.

The 26-year-old managed 14 games as a rookie,  just nine in 2023 and 15 last season. He managed 29 receptions for a career-high 620 yards and two touchdowns in 2024.

It remains unclear when Watson will be able to return to the field but the Packers hope he will be able to make a significant contribute at some point this season.

The Packers have handed Christian Watson a contract extension, despite being sidelined

He will be desperate to return to the field as soon as possible, given the buzz around Green Bay.

The transformative trade for Micah Parsons with the Dallas Cowboys has led many to claim they are Super Bowl contenders after years of playoff misery.

Matt LaFleur’s team certainly backed up that statement with a dominant 27-13 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

The Packers face another major test of their Super Bowl credentials on Thursday night when they host the Washington Commanders, who lost the NFC Championship game last season.
