A moving tribute to Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota was paid by rock legends Oasis in their first reunion show.

The Manchester band, led by Liam and Noel Gallagher, began their comeback tour at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium one day after the 28-year-old Portuguese striker was killed in a car crash with his brother, André Silva, in the Spanish city of Zamora.

As the staunch Manchester City fans played the outro for their song Live Forever, an image of Jota in his number 20 Liverpool shirt was displayed on the screen prompting a huge roar of applause from the 75,000-strong audience.

The funeral of Jota and his brother is taking place in their home town of Gondomar on Saturday.

The band’s gesture won wide approval on social media from Liverpool fans.

“Absolute class, lovely gesture,” one fan said.

Another added: “Can’t normally abide Oasis, but fair play to them for doing this.”

One fan summed up the feelings of many when he said: “Behind the banter of rivals is a shared love of the game.

“Football supporters know when to be one. This meant a lot to us Reds.”
