Nottingham Forest announced the sacking of Ange Postecoglou on Saturday in a blunt 39-word statement.

The Australians’ brief tenure ended less than 20 minutes after a 3-0 home defeat by Chelsea, which left Forest winless in eight games and 17th in the Premier League table.

Postecoglou was appointed in early September following Nuno Espirito Santo’s dismissal but managed only two draws in eight matches across all competitions.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis took the decision immediately after Saturday’s final whistle, frustrated by another poor display at the City Ground.

The club’s statement, issued on Saturday afternoon, read: ‘Nottingham Forest Football Club can confirm that after a series of disappointing results and performances, Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

‘The club will make no further comment at this time.’

The statement’s brevity matched the 39 days Postecoglou spent in the role, underlining the ruthless nature of the club’s decision and the growing frustration over recent performances.

Forest’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea was their sixth defeat under Postecoglou, adding to a run that included a Carabao Cup exit at Swansea and a damaging Europa League defeat at home to Danish side Midtjylland.

The club have not won since the opening weekend of the season, when Nuno was still in charge.

Postecoglou joined Forest looking to rebuild his reputation after leaving Tottenham, where he was dismissed despite winning the Europa League title last season.

His tenure at the City Ground has now become one of the shortest in Premier League history for a permanent head coach.
