New toolkit for businesses and industries in Northern Ireland to harness 5G to drive innovation and economic growth.

The Belfast 5G Innovation Region (5GIR) programme, led by Belfast City Council’s City Innovation Office and funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), is working with businesses, academia, and the public sector to support the adoption of 5G across the Belfast Region.

5G is the fifth generation of wireless communications technology. It delivers substantial improvements over 4G with faster data speeds, lower latency (reduced data transfer delay), increased capacity, and more dependable connections. These advanced capabilities and enhanced reliability are driving new applications and opportunities with the potential to transform industries, businesses, and services.

The 5GIR programme has worked with Digital Catapult to develop a 5G Adoption Toolkit to support businesses and industries in Northern Ireland to harness 5G to drive innovation and economic growth.

The toolkit offers

  • an introduction to 5G and its benefits for the local economy
  • practical advice and resources on adopting 5G in your business
  • a range of 5G case studies featuring local business and organisations
  • various resources and guidance available to support the deployment and adoption of 5G-powered digital technologies

This toolkit provides a clear, actionable pathway for your business to move beyond understanding 5G and successfully integrate the technology.

Find out more about the 5G Innovation Region programme and download the 5G Adoption Toolkit.

The 5GIR programme will open a new funding competition in early summer 2025, with grants of up to £100,000 available to support more businesses and organisations in the Belfast region to harness 5G-powered digital technologies to drive operational efficiencies and increase productivity.
