Some roads have been closed and rail services suspended despite much of north-western England escaping the worst of Storm Goretti.

A yellow severe weather warning for snow remains in place for Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside and Stockport, as well as parts of Bury and east Manchester, until 12:00 GMT.

National Highways said the A628 Woodhead Pass connecting Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire remained closed in both directions between the A616 for Flouch and the A57 for Hollingworth because of the snow.

Drivers are advised to use the M60, M62 and M1 as an alternative route. Parts of the A57 Snake Pass were closed on Thursday night and remain shut.

Trains in the region have also been affected, with East Midlands Railways confirming that the Hope Valley between Sheffield and Manchester would not reopen until Saturday.

Meanwhile, London Northwestern Railway said all Friday morning services between Birmingham and Liverpool Lime Street had been cancelled.

Northern services between Guide Bridge and Hadfield, as well as Hazel Grove and Buxton, have also been cancelled.

Northern said trains were still running on other routes but warned these may be subject to short-notice cancellations and overcrowding due to severe weather across the network.

It said customers would be able to use their tickets on all Bee Network bus services throughout Friday.
