NFL commissioner Roger Goodell drops major Taylor Swift hint over Super Bowl halftime show

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell offered Taylor Swift fans a glimmer of hope when pressed on the possibility of the pop sensation performing the Super Bowl halftime show this season.

Odds for the 14-time Grammy Award winner, 35, to headline the NFL’s season finale soared last week when she announced her engagement to Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, also 35.

And Goodell did nothing to quell the speculation when he was quizzed about a special appearance from the songstress in the wake of the tight end’s romantic proposal.

The commissioner, who has spoken glowingly of the singer and her impact on the NFL since she began dating Kelce, attempted to stay tight-lipped on the subject – but didn’t rule out the possibility.

‘We would always love to have Taylor play. She is a special, special talent, and obviously she would be welcome at any time,’ Goodell said on the TODAY Show.

‘Is it in the works?’ host Savannah Guthrie asked.

‘I can’t tell you anything about it,’ Goodell replied.

‘Is it a maybe?’ followed up Savannah, to which Goodell confirmed: ‘It’s a maybe.’

Goodell was then pressed by Craig Melvin on when fans could expect an announcement on this season’s performer.

‘I’m waiting on my friend Jay-Z,’ Goodell joked in response. ‘It’s in his hands. I’m waiting for the smoke to come out.’

Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, produce the Super Bowl halftime shows, signing a deal with the NFL in 2020.

Last season, rapper Kendrick Lamar was announced as the headliner for Super Bowl LIX halftime show on September 8, 2024 – coinciding with the opening weekend of the 2024 season.

The new campaign kicks off this week with the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, taking on their bitter divisional rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, in Thursday’s curtain raiser.

Meanwhile, Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs will open their season against the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday night before a full slate of action on Sunday.

Swift herself is no stranger to the big game, having cheered on Kelce and Kansas City from the stands at the past two Super Bowls.

The ‘Fortnight’ hitmaker made her Super Bowl debut in 2023 when she made the mad dash from Tokyo to Las Vegas to watch her NFL beau and his teammates be crowned back-to-back champions against the San Francisco 49ers.

She also made an appearance in New Orleans in February when the Chiefs attempted to seal a historic three-peat. However, she was forced to watch on as Kansas City was routed 40-22 by the Eagles.

She wrapped up her $2billion Eras Tour – which saw her perform 149 concerts held on five continents – late last year.

Swift has since kept a low profile with both she and Kelce staying out of the spotlight for the majority of this year’s offseason until last month.

Swift made a surprise special guest appearance on Kelce’s New Heights podcast, where she unveiled the cover and track list of her 12th studio album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, which will be released on October 3.

With new music in the works, fans are already speculating if Swift could make a return to the stage in the near future.
