Michael Carrick addresses Man United future as decision on permanent role looms

Michael Carrick has accepted it is inevitable there will be talk about him managing Manchester United on a permanent basis after his superb start in charge and stressed that he loves being at Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old has won six of his seven games after being appointed until the end of the season, taking 19 points from a possible 21, while Sunday’s victory over Crystal Palace took United third in the Premier League.

While Carrick has deflected questions about whether he wants the job, he has hinted he does, accepted that questions are the logical consequence of his winning start and said that he is looking to the club’s future in everything he does.

“It’s going to be every week, isn’t it?” he said. “There’s no getting away from the situation. There’s not really an awful lot I can say about it. I love being here. I love doing what I’m doing.”

Michael Carrick says Premier League set-piece tactics have ‘gone too far’

Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has weighed in on the Premier League set-piece debate, saying that jostling and grappling in the box during corners has “gone too far”.

An increase in goals from set-pieces has been a major theme of this season, with more dead-ball goals scored in the 2025-26 campaign so far than in the entirety of last season.

Table-topping Arsenal have led the trend and scored another two from corners in their 2-1 win over Chelsea this weekend.

Man United’s Jack Fletcher handed six-game ban for using homophobic slur against opponent

The Manchester United midfielder Jack Fletcher has been given a six-match suspension after being sent off for calling an opponent a “gay boy”.

The 18-year-old, who is the son of United’s former caretaker manager Darren Fletcher, was shown a red card in an EFL Trophy match against Barnsley in October.

Fletcher, who was also fined £1,500, has been ordered to attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme, though both the FA and the Barnsley player accepted he had no intention to be homophobic.

Last time out: Another comeback win for Carrick’s United

Benjamin Sesko scored his fourth goal in five games as the Red Devils completed a comeback at Old Trafford, so could Michael Carrick’s come next?

Last time out: Newcastle’s home woes continue

Thierno Barry came off the bench to fire Everton to Premier League victory at Newcastle for the second successive season in a dramatic conclusion to a madcap encounter.

Barry struck seconds after fellow substitute Jacob Murphy looked to have snatched a draw for the hosts to claim a 3-2 win and condemn the Magpies to a third successive league defeat at St James’ Park, although it took a stunning late save by Jordan Pickford to seal it.

Eddie Howe’s men, who had lost to Aston Villa and Brentford in their previous two home games, have now won just one of their seven most recent league fixtures and find themselves in the wrong half of the table heading into a brutal run of fixtures in three different competitions in March.

Harry Maguire handed 15-month suspended sentence by Greek court over Mykonos incident

Harry Maguire will appeal against a 15-month suspended sentence following a fresh ruling by a Greek court relating to an incident in Mykonos in August 2020.

The Manchester United and England centre-back was found guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery, according to Sky Sports.

Maguire was involved in a brawl alongside family members while on holiday on the Greek island and spent two nights in a police cell following his arrest, but has always denied wrongdoing.

While Maguire’s suspended sentence has been reduced in length and severity, the defender is determined to clear his name and will appeal the latest verdict, having refused opportunities to settle.

What is the Man Utd team news?

Luke Shaw, who came off in Sunday’s win over Crystal Palace with illness, should be available but the game will come too soon for Mason Mount or Lisandro Martinez, while Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt remain out. Harry Maguire is preparing for the game as normal after he was handed a 15-month suspended sentence by a Greek court earlier.

Possible line-up: Lammens; Dalot, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko

What is the Newcastle team news?

Nick Woltemade is a doubt due to illness, with Newcastle still without Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley and Fabian Schar. Jacob Ramsey should be available after recovering from illness.

Possible line-up: Pope; Tripper, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Wissa, Gordon

Good evening and welcome

Newcastle United face Manchester United as the hosts look to improve their dismal Premier League run against the in-form visitors.

Newcastle have lost five of their last six in the Premier League under Eddie Howe, including back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Everton.

Michael Carrick, meanwhile, has overseen six victories from his seven games in charge of United, following Sunday’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Manchester United have moved into third place in the Premier League while Newcastle are languishing in the bottom half.
