Newcastle United have received a transfer boost at last this summer as they have agreed a deal for AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.
The clubs have agreed a package of around £34.3million and the German is due on Tyneside for a medical.
Thiaw will provide competition at the heart of the defence, taking their stable to five. Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles started here, after last season’s first-choice pairing Fabian Schar and Dan Burn played against Espanyol on Friday night.
Long term, Newcastle will see Thiaw, 24, as the right-sided replacement for Schar, who turns 34 in December.
His expected arrival will finally bring an end to links with Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace defender who was subject of a summer-long pursuit 12 months ago.
The deal for Thiaw comes with the Magpies also turning their attentions to bringing in a striker amid the uncertain future of Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko on the verge of joining Manchester United.

Newcastle have also agreed a deal for 21-year-old Porto striker Samu Aghehowa

The Magpies have had no luck whatsoever in their search for a new forward this summer – up until now
Eddie Howe’s side have reportedly turned their attention to Porto striker Samu Aghehowa after losing out to United in the race to sign Sesko.
The Magpies have had no luck in their search for a new forward after star man Alexander Isak made it clear he wants to leave and join Liverpool.
Sesko has been added to a list of attacking rejections that includes Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and Hugo Ekitike.
The situation is becoming somewhat desperate with the new season beginning in one week’s time.
And David Ornstein of The Athletic claims that Newcastle are now considering a move for Porto’s Aghehowa.
He adds that no formal approach has been made as of yet and there is no guarantee that it will happen.
Aghehowa shone for the Portuguese side last season following his move from Atletico Madrid.
The 21-year-old netted 27 goals in 45 games in all competitions and notably netted twice against Man United in the group stages of the Europa League.
Aghehowa signed a five-year contract with Porto, which contains a €100m release clause, through to 2029.
