New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has revealed that first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart will not play for the team this season as he is better suited to learn the ropes from out of the spotlight.
Giants fans hoped as the team traded back into the first round to select Dart at No 25 that he would eventually find the field in 2025.
Yet, with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston already on the roster, Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, in a critical year for both under possible hot seats, a long-term outlook is being taken.
The move for Daboll and Schoen is deja vu, as they had a similar plan for a previous NFL stop together.
‘We’ve been through this, we went through it with Josh Allen,’ Schoen said to NFL.com. ‘We had a little bit different quarterback room at the time, but he was going to sit his rookie year and then halftime of the opening game we’re getting smoked by Baltimore, so we put him in and the rest was history.’
‘So that plan didn’t go as well, but we didn’t have a Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston in the room. So again, Jaxson’s going to come in, he’s got to learn the offense, there’s a lot to learn, these NFL offenses are hard to grasp and pick up and then be able to go out and execute, so the ability for him to learn and sit behind two consummate pros already will be beneficial for him.’

Allen is now one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks and the reigning league MVP after another impressive year with the Bills.
The Bills quarterbacks heading into the 2018 season were AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman, who are dwarfed by the ability in hindsight of Allen.
The Giants are hoping Dart could be anywhere as good as Allen, with more experience in the quarterback room around him.
It is a bold move to have a first-round pick sit until his sophomore NFL season at least. And it comes at a time when there is a clear top duo in the NFC East, without the Giants in it.
The Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders were the two teams to play in the NFC Championship Game last season, and neither had shown signs of faltering heading into this season.
If, and most likely when, turbulence hits for New York this season, Daboll and Schoen may need to reassess their plan.
