The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has today announced the appointment of Dr Jeff James CBE as its new Chief Executive.
Dr James, who previously served as the Chief Executive of The National Archives, will join DBS in April as CEO designate, before formally taking over the role on 1 June 2025.
The appointment follows the decision of current CEO, Eric Robinson, to retire.

His extensive experience in both the public and third sectors will be invaluable as we continue our vital work in making recruitment and employment safer. Dr James said “I am honoured to be joining the Disclosure and Barring Service as its Chief Executive. The work of DBS is essential in protecting vulnerable people across the country, and I look forward to working with the dedicated team to build on the organisation’s achievements and further strengthen its crucial role in safeguarding.”
Dr James brings significant leadership experience to the role, having previously led The National Archives for a decade and served in various other public sector and charity organisations, including 14 years in the Royal Navy.
