Net zero ports call for evidence

Views sought on the challenges and opportunities associated with decarbonising ports towards net zero practices.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is in the process of producing policy for net zero carbon practices of vessels docked at ports.

To support the policy development, DfT are looking to understand the

  • activities, challenges and developments at these ports
  • issues faced, both now and in the future, by these ports for decarbonisation

DfT are asking for information and insight about

  • deployment of decarbonising infrastructure
  • onsite energy generation
  • ports refuelling capabilities
  • the current and future electricity requirements at ports
  • the growth opportunities for ports, and wider sectors, in decarbonising ports
  • the current state of decarbonisation in ports
  • the role ports can play in enabling their tenants and the shipping sector to decarbonise

Input and engagement is sought from a diverse range of stakeholders, as it is recognised that shaping a net zero emission ports policy requires input from multiple perspectives. As well as ports, engagement is encouraged from shipping companies, any entity that operates within the boundaries of a port, energy networks and associations, technology firms, infrastructure providers, and any other organisation or individual that has an interest in these policies.

Find out more about the call for evidence and how to respond.

The call for evidence will close to responses on Tuesday 24 June 2025.
