Rugby league commentator Andrew Moore was admitted to hospital after he suffered a heart attack earlier this week.

He underwent successful surgery and is understood to be recovering in Westmead Hospital in Parramatta.

Moore, who also commentates on cricket, explained to ABC that he was thankful for the amazing care that he had received in hospital.

‘I am grateful for the quick response from the ambulance paramedics who were amazing and the staff here at Westmead who go above and beyond,’ Moore said.

‘I look forward to being back soon and am thankful to all those who have reached out with their well wishes.’

His colleague Brett Sprigg revealed the news prior to Penrith’s crunch match against Melbourne on Thursday night.

‘He actually sent us a message, his ABC rugby league colleagues, just this afternoon and he’s a bit knocked around, but in good spirits,’ Sprigg said.

‘I know, trust me, how much he hates missing the footy.’

Moore joined the ABC back in 2015, having previously worked for 2GB.

He currently works as the broadcaster’s chief rugby league radio caller.

The ABC issued an update on their colleague’s well-being on Thursday.

‘We are saddened to share that our colleague and friend Andrew Moore has recently suffered a heart attack,’ ABC content director Tim Verrall explained.

‘He has undergone surgery and is now recovering with his family.

‘Andrew has asked us to pass on his gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and hospital staff who have cared for him.

‘All of us at ABC Sport are sending our love and best wishes to Andrew, and we can’t wait to hear his voice back in the commentary box when the time is right.

‘Until then, mate — we’ve got things covered. Rest up and focus on getting well.’

It is not clear when Moore will return to the airwaves.

Moore had worked on four matches during the NRL’s most recent round, travelling to both Melbourne and Newcastle.

‘Andrew is the best in the business,’ his commentary partner Luke Lewis said to The Daily Telegraph.

‘We are going to miss him in the next little period, but his first priority has to be getting his health right.  I know he will be back and at the top of his game soon.’

‘He has already taught me so much about broadcasting and we all can’t wait to work alongside him again.’
