The racing world has been left in mourning once again following the death of Indianapolis 500 star Rick Treadway, who has passed away at the age of 56.

The news was confirmed by Fox Sports on Monday afternoon, revealing that Treadway had died after suffering a motorcycle accident on May 30.

The tragic news comes just days after NASCAR legend Kyle Busch tragically passed away at the age of 41 after a sudden battle with pneumonia, which led to sepsis.

Treadway, meanwhile, started in the 2002 Indy 500.

Treadway started 17th and placed 29th in the No. 5 Sprint/Kyocera Wireless/Airlink Enterprises G Force/Chevrolet fielded by his father Fred Treadway’s team and as a teammate to two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk.

Luyendyk was among those who immediately shared a tribute to the former Indy 500 driver. Taking to X on Monday, he wrote: ‘Sad news hearing Rick Treadway passed away last Saturday. Our condolences go out to my former @IndyCar team owner Fred Treadway, Janice and Brian Treadway.

‘Rick was a fun, crazy, humble, wild and brave personality! RIP Ricky. We are thinking of you Treadway family’.

Treadway made his INDYCAR SERIES debut back in 2001 at the Kentucky Speedway. His final start came in 2002 at the season finale at Texas Motor Speedway.

During his career, his best finish was fifth at the 2001 season finale in Texas.

Prior to joining the INDYCAR SERIES, Treadway raced in SCCA competition, as well as competing in Formula 2000 junior racing.

Tributes have since poured in for the former Indy 500 star. On X, one fan wrote: ‘Oh man!! Great guy!! Race in peace, Rick!!’

Meanwhile, Conor Daly, who competes part-time in the IndyCar Series, wrote on X: ‘Really sad to see this news today. If you listen to @SpeedStreetPod you know how much this name means to a certain segment of our show. RIP Ricky.

‘We’ll keep doing our #indy500 driver research in your honor’, he added.

The news comes less than two weeks after the sudden and tragic death of NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, who passed away after a sudden battle with sepsis.

Busch died in a North Carolina hospital last week just days before the running of the annual Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The 41-year-old had been dealing with an illness for weeks, which was later revealed to be a serious case of pneumonia that developed into sepsis.

Busch’s death came two months after he and wife Samantha settled a lawsuit against Pacific Life Insurance Company out of court, after claiming they were misled into purchasing life insurance policies.

The couple alleged they paid over $10.4million in premiums based on misleading illustrations and false promises of guaranteed returns.
