Scottie Scheffler suffered an astonishing meltdown at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Friday after throwing his ball into the lake in anger over a missed putt.

The world No. 1 was going for a par on the 18th hole at Bay Hill Club in Orlando when he failed to make a 10ft putt, forcing him to settle for a bogey.

And after the uncharacteristic error, Scheffler couldn’t contain his anger.

He reacted to the bogey by picking up his ball and launching it into the nearby lake, with footage of his furious outburst going viral on social media.

‘Was in the middle until it broke left!’ the American was heard fuming to his caddie, Ted Scott, after throwing his ball in disgust.

The bogey left Scheffler 10 shots adrift of leader Daniel Berger, and after going three under par he was critical of the greens at Bay Hill Club.

‘You can always hit it softer. I was surprised the ball picked up speed as it was rolling,’ he said about the 10ft miss.

‘There’s no friction. When the ball starts rolling, you’re at the mercy of the wind and the bumps.’

The four-time major champion added about the greens: ‘It’s been like this before. Typically here, if you go late Friday, they’re pretty much already dead.

‘It’s not anything unusual. It’s a good test. It’s hard.

‘There are certain holes that get a little silly because the run-ups are soft and the greens are so firm. But it’s like that every year.

‘This year is actually less windy. If we had crazy wind, they probably would have had to stop.’

Justin Thomas, who failed to make the cut, agreed with Scheffler after telling reporters that he was glad to be making an early exit.

‘There is zero chance that they are going to be alive Sunday,’ Thomas predicted about the greens.

‘That is one good thing about now playing here this weekend because it is going to suck.’
