Celtic suffered the humiliation of a shocking own goal in the first half of their Champions League clash with Club Brugge on Wednesday night.
The Scottish giants have once again been the best team domestically, but rather than their struggles in the Champions League that have become all too regular in recent years they have impressed this term.
With two wins and a draw from four games heading into Wednesday night’s clash with Belgium’s Club Brugge, Celtic found themselves holding one of the 16 playoff positions in the League Phase.
However, with Brendan Rodgers’ side looking to make it three from five and further cement their perhaps surprising credentials as qualifiers to the next round, they suffered a nightmare setback in the early stages.
With Kasper Schmeichel looking to play out the back, the ball was passed back from midfield into Cameron Carter-Vickers inside his own box.
Unbeknownst to the USA international defender, Schmeichel had moved outside his right-hand post to create a better passing angle before the ball came to Carter-Vickers.
Cameron Carter-Vickers suffered the ignominy of scoring a shocking own goal on Wednesday
The USA international put the ball past his own goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel who had moved out of his goal
Despite the Dane’s best attempts he could not make up the ground to keep the own goal out
However, without looking to see where his keeper was, Carter-Vickers played a blind pass where he felt the Dane would be.
But it was a disaster, the ball rolling agonisingly into the bottom corner of Schmeichel’s goal, on the opposite side to where he was stood as he ran to try and get back across in vain and keep the own goal out.
In fact, Carter-Vickers seemingly knew exactly what he’d down within a heartbeat, but could only watch on dejected as it crept into the bottom corner to give the Belgian side the lead, which they held onto by the break.
Carter-Vickers has spent just over two seasons at Celtic since signing on a permanent basis in 2022, following a season on loan from Tottenham.
In that period he has played 127 times, scoring seven goals and providing two assists, as well as picking up three Scottish league titles, including a treble under Ange Postecoglou in 2022-23.
