Ralf Schumacher believes his nephew Mick Schumacher’s Formula One career is over after a disastrous debut in IndyCar.

The former Haas F1 driver, who is the son of Michael Schumacher, reignited his motorsport career by signing with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing in the IndyCar series last November.

Schumacher, 26, made his debut for the team at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday. However, his race didn’t last long.

The German driver lasted just four corners before being wiped out in a three-car collision and forced to retire.

He was caught up in the aftermath of a collision between Sting Ray Robb and Santino Ferrucci. Despite trying to keep the car going, in the blink of an eye, Schumacher’s race was over

Schumacher said: ‘To be honest, my first thought was: “Can I maybe reverse this thing out of here”. But then the Safety Car arrived faster than expected, the engine was turned off, and the AMR people got me out immediately.

‘We’re now looking at what we could have done better. Qualifying was one point. We were obviously got blocked, lost momentum, and missed out on a better group.

‘The consequences followed promptly on Sunday, as there is little room for error at the back of the field.

‘It’s racing. When you start at the back, there are always moments when you go into a corner with three or four cars side by side. That in itself is a risk. The most important lesson for us is that we need to qualify further up the grid. It’s as simple as that.’

It has been four years since Schumacher was dropped by Haas, having made 43 starts in F1.

To try and keep his dream of a return to the sport alive, he raced for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship in 2024 and 2025, achieving three podium finishes.

He had hoped that a return to the F1 grid was on the horizon for the upcoming 2026 campaign, entering talks with both Audi and Alpine; however, he failed to secure a seat.

And now that Mick’s new venture into IndyCar has begun, Ralf, who secured six wins during a 10-year career in F1, believes the ‘door is also closed’ for his nephew to return to the pinnacle of motorsport.

Ralf added that he believes Mick ‘deserved a place in Formula 1’ for this season, but a dream return is now all but over.
