In an era where competition in cyberspace is relentless, it is crucial for Defence to have a skilled cyber workforce capable of defending our vital networks and operating in and through cyberspace to counter threats.
To bolster the future cyber workforce, Strategic Command launched a bursary in 2023 for 16-18 year olds studying digital, cyber, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses. This initiative helps students with their studies and promotes digital and cyber careers in national security.
Blackpool and The Fylde College, a partner in delivering this bursary, hosted General Jim Hockenhull, Commander of Strategic Command. During the visit, the students showcased their impressive skills and discussed cyber and digital careers in national security with representatives from Strategic Command and the National Cyber Force.
Reflecting on the visit, General Hockenhull said
It was a pleasure meeting talented students from across Lancashire at Blackpool and The Fylde College. There was a palpable sense of excitement about the cyber opportunities in the region, and impressive skills on display.
The greatest challenge we face is the battle for talent, particularly in digital and cyber professions. Having met many students eager to bring their skills to careers in national security, I am optimistic about our future workforce. They will be expert and committed, ready to tackle national threats and contribute to our prosperity.
With the National Cyber Force opening its new headquarters in Lancashire, this region, along with the expertise from its industry and academia, will be central to the nation’s cyber ecosystem.

A leader in technical and professional education and training, Blackpool and The Fylde College unveiled their new Immersive Auditorium during the visit – an impressive combination of audio and visuals resulting in an immersive and productive educational space. It is ideal for visualising technical concepts in an immersive environment.

The National Cyber Force – a partnership between defence and intelligence – will be establishing its new permanent base in Samlesbury. This exciting move will bring new jobs to Lancashire, and benefit from the talent and expertise in the region.
The National Cyber Force is part of the Lancashire Cyber Partnership, launched last year, which is a powerful and ambitious collaboration that also includes Lancashire County Council, the University of Central Lancashire, Lancaster University and BAE Systems. It brings together expertise, resources, and decision-makers from across both the private and public sectors to shape, support, and promote the County’s world-class cyber strengths and fast-growing cyber ecosystem.

We are working collaboratively in Lancashire to inspire young people, students and residents about the opportunities that will result from the basing of the National Cyber Force in Lancashire.
From primary school to higher education there are schemes in place to inspire and upskill our people. The bursary scheme is an example of a new and innovative programme – we are delighted to be working with Strategic Command and wider defence partners to enable further education students to gain insights, skills and financial support to pursue a career in defence and security.
This visit not only highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance digital education but also underscores the critical role of partnerships in driving innovation and security in the UK. Our partnerships across government, with industry, universities and academia, and our international partners, are our superpower and will support the UK’s security and prosperity.
