Media release: More new affordable homes for Cheltenham residents at Regents Village

It’s an exciting time for the town following the completion of the first 10 out of 70 high quality and affordable homes at the Regents Village development.

The remaining 60 homes are at various stages of construction and will be handed over during the coming months.

Based at the former Swindon Farm site, these new properties have been developed by Cheltenham Borough Council in partnership with Persimmon Homes South Midlands as part of a section 106 agreement. The homes are a mix of 1, 2, 3 and 4 bed properties available for social rent and shared ownership. The delivery of these new homes has been supported by construction consultants, Ward Williams.

The new homes have been designed with sustainability in mind and have been fitted with air source heat pumps, solar panels and they all have an electric car charging point.

The shared ownership scheme, also known as ‘part buy and part rent’, could ultimately see the home owned entirely by the shared owner. This is all part of the council’s commitment to meet housing need, bringing new and affordable homes to local people.

Cllr Alisha Lewis, cabinet member for major developments and housing delivery said: “Since bringing Cheltenham Borough Homes back in house, it has been our mission to provide more high quality and energy efficient affordable homes to local people. This is our first major project in that mission, working with Persimmon in Regents Village. It’s exciting to see this development grow and provide a thriving new community.

“These new energy efficient homes will help reduce energy bills for their residents and have been designed to a more accessible specification that allows for future adaptations such as grab rails to be installed. It’s important to us that these homes are set up and fully equipped to support a good quality of life, now and into the future.

“I look forward to working with future developers across the town to meet housing need and bring more much needed high quality and affordable homes to Cheltenham.”

Russell Griffin, managing director at Persimmon Homes South Midlands, said: “Handing over a portion of our homes at Regents Village is the latest example of our successful partnership with Cheltenham Borough Council, which is delivering much-needed new homes for local families. It was great to welcome Cllr Lewis to the site to see the positive impact these homes are having in the region.

“We’ll continue to work closely with our local partners to ensure our investment makes a positive difference to communities across the region.”

Jon Whitehead, associate partner at Ward Williams, added: “Being part of a team that delivers affordable homes for local people is something we’re deeply proud of—it’s about more than buildings, it’s creating positive impact for communities”

The Section 106 agreement is in place between the local authority and the applicant as part of the granting of planning permission; it ensures that the housing is of high quality and with the latest zero carbon technology, with homes going to local people most in need of affordable housing.

Find out more about shared ownership – which is a way for people unable to buy a property on the open market to purchase a share of a home.
