Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford’s ‘petty’ wife Kelly has questioned the integrity of the NFL referees who took charge of their dramatic loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Rams were beaten by the Seahawks in a Thursday night thriller at Seattle’s Lumen Field, where the hosts completed a sensational comeback to win 38-37 and leapfrog their rivals at the top of the NFC West.

However, Thursday’s epic encounter was not without controversy after two contentious decisions which both went against LA.

The first saw them denied a touchdown in the first quarter when officials called a penalty for an illegal man downfield on 4th-and-goal at the one-yard line, much to the dismay of viewers at home. Prime Video rules analyst Terry McAulay also disagreed with the ruling, saying: ‘This really isn’t a foul.’

Yet the most unusual came during the fourth quarter, after what seemed to be a failed Seattle two-point attempt was eventually ruled successful despite Rams defender Jared Verse tipping Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold’s pass to the ground.

Following the opinion-dividing calls that went in Seattle’s favor, Kelly Stafford has peddled a wild conspiracy theory on her Instagram story after sharing a video of referees gesturing animatedly to a Seahawks catch in overtime.

She wrote alongside the video: ‘Never seen refs get this excited about a catch? Now the blown dead two point conversion and illegal man downfield makes sense.

‘Should we be looking into this? Can I get these refs names?’

Kelly then made light of her post in a separate Instagram story after admitting: ‘Ya I’m petty.’

The two-point drama helped the Seahawks tie the score and eventually send the game to overtime in chaotic scenes.

Seattle scored a touchdown to claw the score back to 30-28 with 6:23 of regulation left and went for the two-point conversion in an attempt to bring themselves level with their divisional rivals.

Yet, initially it appeared that Mike Macdonald’s had failed to seal the crucial two points when Verse tipped Darnold’s pass that fell to the ground. The attempt was ruled incomplete on the field and the conversion failed.

That was before, in a twist of events, replay review concluded that Darnold had attempted a backward pass.

It was determined that Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet recovered the loose ball in the end zone when he picked it up before the whistle had blown, and therefore counted as a two-point conversion.

‘Very interesting,’ Rams head coach Sean McVay said after the Rams lost. ‘Didn’t get a clear explanation of everything that went on just because of some of the timing of it.

‘I’ve never seen anything or never been a part of anything like that. And I’ve grown up around this game. I’m not making excuses. We don’t do that. I don’t believe in that. It doesn’t move us forward, but we do want clarity and an understanding of the things that we can do to minimize that when we rejected the 2-point conversion.’

The Rams locker room also questioned the ruling with wide receiver Puka Nacua tweeted minutes after the game ended: ‘Appreciate you stripes for your contribution. Lol.’

When asked what he was referencing in his tweet, Nacua added: ‘Just the opportunities that we didn’t take advantage of. Some of the moments that we put in the officials’ hands just felt like we could have executed to not put ourselves in those situations.’
