  • Kerr and Kristie Mewis welcomed newborn son

Katrina Gorry has defended Sam Kerr after an Australian politician accused the Matildas star of ‘deliberately depriving’ her baby son of a father.

Gorry, who shares daughter Harper and son Koby with her fiancée Clara Markstedt, hit back after Family First party national director Lyle Shelton made the vile comments last month.

Shelton spoke out just after Kerr and her fiancée Kristie Mewis announced the arrival of their son Jagger, writing, ‘A baby is born – but where’s dad?

‘Family first congratulates Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis on the birth of their son – but we must speak a truth too many are afraid to say.

‘No child should be deliberately deprived of their father. Children aren’t lifestyle accessories – they’re human beings with rights.’

Shelton went on to ask: ‘When cultural elites cheer on choices that sideline dads, who’s left standing for the child?’

Gorry slammed the statement and others like it as she said the gender of a child’s parents has nothing to do with the quality of their care.

‘When I look at my kids, they’re full of love, they’re full of hapiness,’ she told News Corp.

‘Yeah, they don’t have a dad, but they’ve got two mums.

‘Harper thinks it’s pretty cool that she’s got two mums and I see the life that they live.

‘I’ve seen kids being brought up with a mum and a dad and [they’re] not treated the same way.

‘And I think if you’re two healthy parents and you can give them love and happiness, then what’s left to give?

‘It shouldn’t matter if you’re a male or female. It should just matter if you can love the child and give them everything that they need.’

Gorry added that she and her partner spent a lot of money to have their children through IVF, ‘and I think that says more than anything’ about how much they care for their kids.

The 32-year-old midfielder – who will marry Clarkstedt on June 15 – recently opened up about her four-year battle with a debilitating eating disorder.

‘I couldn’t even get out of bed, I just couldn’t see how I was ever going to feel better,’ she said.

‘I didn’t want to go to training or social events, or even play football, something I once loved.

‘I lost all joy in life.’

In 2017, Gorry was living and playing in Japan when her life started to spiral out of control following the breakdown of a long-term relationship.

The then 25-year-old needed to regain control of her circumstances and soon developed an eating disorder.

Gorry sought help from a psychologist, but says the turning point in her recovery was becoming pregnant with her first child Harper in 2020.

‘My recovery journey has been long and gradual, with ups and downs.

‘I finally admitted to my psychologist that I needed help.

‘I just needed to open up to someone who would listen, they didn’t need to fix me, they just needed to be there and listen.

‘One of the biggest shifts came when I became pregnant, that’s when I realised how much I loved and appreciated my body and how much respect I had for it.’
