Manchester News – Students across Manchester celebrate exam success

Students at schools and colleges across Manchester have been picking up their exam results today after sitting A-level, BTEC and T-level exams before the summer.

This year marks the fourth year of results for vocational T-level qualifications, with increasing numbers of pupils in the city opting to follow T-level technical courses that see pupils split their time between classroom learning and industrial placements.

Early indications are that the majority of young people got the results they were hoping for in their exams, with large numbers of students in the city now heading off to university, into apprenticeships, further training, or employment.

Councillor Julie Reid, Executive Member for Early Years, Children and Young People, Manchester City Council, said: “Congratulations to all students in Manchester who have picked up their results today – they should be very proud of themselves and their achievements.

“The amount of effort and sheer hard work it takes to first of all really commit to courses across the two years, and then to prepare for and sit exams or complete coursework, is phenomenal as any student picking up their results today will know.

“It’s important to remember also that today isn’t just about A-levels, increasingly more of our young people in the city are opting to follow BTEC or T-level courses, which can be brilliant choices for students that really help them along on their chosen career path post-18.

“Regardless however of which route pupils have followed they deserve a massive pat on the back today – as do all the staff in our schools and colleges who have supported our young people every step of the way in their journey so far.

“We’re very proud of all of you.”

One school in Manchester is celebrating a landmark achievement today as its very first cohort of A-level students pick up their results and do so with an impressive 100 per cent pass rate.  Marking a hugely successful debut for its sixth form, a third of all the results achieved by pupils at Didsbury Sixth Form – which is attached to Didsbury High School – were graded A or A*, with 93 percent of students achieving high grades A*-B.  In total, almost two-thirds of all grades awarded at the school were A*-B, with the average grade across all entries a B.

Students from the school are now going on to study subjects such as medicine, computer science, engineering, psychology, history and Spanish, at some of the top universities across the country.

Katie Houghton, Head of Didsbury High, said: “A-levels are such a crucial stepping stone to access the future of choice; seeing our students achieve such outstanding results and go on to such aspirational destinations makes me immensely proud of them and our staff.”

Whilst most of the city’s young people have achieved the results they needed to pursue their planned next steps, help and support is there for any students who haven’t achieved what they were hoping for, or who are unsure about what to do next.

Councillor Julie Reid said: “Results day can be a really difficult day for those students whose results don’t match up to what they were hoping for, with thousands of students up and down the country every year finding themselves in this position.  The most important thing is not to panic. Know that if this is you, with the right support and guidance you will find your way through this and go on to future success – but you must speak to your teachers or staff in your school or college.  They’re best placed to help you navigate your next steps and are ready and waiting to advise and support you.”

Students in need of help and support after getting their exam results today should speak in the first instance to their school or college, but there are many other sources of help also available including from The Education Hub

Mental health advice and support for young people who need help with how they are feeling after picking up their results is available from organisations including:
