A relaunch has taken place to celebrate the network of green trails throughout Manchester.

Over the years the paths, routes and trails throughout Manchester have changed and moved as the city has grown.

With more people than ever seeking to enjoy the outdoor space this city and surrounding region has to over a new and improved series of trail maps have been rolled out.

Thanks to the efforts of the Manchester and Salford Ramblers, funded through Manchester Active, a range of maps, banners and posters are to be distributed throughout the city, allowing people to use a simple QR code to find their nearest route, and enjoy Manchester and Salford’s green trails.

The 15 trails throughout the area were originally launched in 2012, before they were updated again in 2018.

This relaunch event, which took place in Chapel Street Park, Levenshulme, welcomed members of the community as well as local ramblers in celebrating the new and improved network maps.

Councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods, said: “In a city as big as Manchester finding areas of green space can be incredibly important for our overall wellbeing. The relaunch of our rambling trails with new and improved maps and information will be very beneficial for people who want to get out and about, and perhaps discover some of Manchester’s hidden gems.

“I’d like to thank our colleagues at Manchester Active and TfGM for their support in this endeavour, as well as the Manchester and Salford Ramblers for their tireless passion for the outdoors, and their drive to make these trails accessible for everyone.”

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure at Manchester City Council, said: “We’re proud to support the relaunch of the Manchester Green Trails, which make it easier than ever for people to move more and enjoy the fantastic green spaces our city has to offer. Whether it’s a gentle stroll, a jog, or a family walk at the weekend, these routes open up new opportunities for everyone to connect with nature, explore their local area and boost their wellbeing. This project is a great example of how partnership working can help make being active part of everyday life in Manchester.”

A spokesperson for the Manchester and Salford Ramblers, said: “The Ramblers, as Britain’s walking charity, is committed to extending the joys of walking – not just in the countryside but in our cities and urban areas too.

“You can get out into nature in Manchester’s Parks and other green spaces, as well as alongside our canals and rivers. The Manchester Green Trail help you discover the routes near where you live so you do not have to go far.”
