A new bridge spanning the Ashton Canal has now been completed.
Following several months of improvement works a permanent and much improved crossing has been created, linking New Islington Green to the marina.
The existing Grade II lock bridge when in use made it difficult for pedestrians and impossible for cyclists. This was understandably a significant impediment and one which needed to be remedied, given the growth of population in the area and the need to preserve good transport links to and from the marina and public transport links.
The step free link also makes it far easier for people with disabilities to travel through the area, something which was previously harder to accomplish.
Given the popularity and continued growth of the New Islington area putting new and improved infrastructure in place was a top priority for the Council. The new crossing features a widened path, lighting to deter antisocial behaviour and a non-slip surface to ensure safety during the wetter months.
At an event on Thursday, August 7, stakeholders for the project gathered at the new bridge to celebrate its completion.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: “This is a hugely significant upgrade for the area, providing a seamless transport link between the burgeoning marina area with the rest of Ancoats.
“Prior to the new crossing being built there were a number of issues that people faced when trying to get over the canal, with it being particularly difficult for people with mobility issues, or those who used a bike or a pram.
“With the opening of this new crossing we have managed to vastly improve the connectivity in the area as well as preserving the Grade II listed lock gates in the process.”
Sven Till, Chief Executive Officer, A E Yates Ltd., said: “A E Yates Ltd., in partnership with Manchester City Council, is proud to announce the successful completion of the Ashton Canal Bridge in Ancoats. The bridge is now fully open to pedestrians and cyclists, providing a vital new link for those commuting in and around the city.
“As part of our commitment to social value, A E Yates Ltd. has invested nearly £400,000 into the local community throughout the course of this project. This has included hiring local talent, working with local businesses, supporting charitable organisations through donations and volunteer efforts, and engaging with nearby schools to inspire and involve the next generation.
“We’re delighted to see the bridge already making a positive impact in the community.”
