Warning: This article contains details that some may find distressing, including details of severe injuries.

A dad who tried to kill his baby has been jailed for 35 years.

Rhydian Lynne Rhys Jamieson, 28, known as Rhys, left the child with “catastrophic injuries” following the attack in Cwm Cou, Ceredigion, in January 2025.

The baby, who cannot be named, was found lying face down under a duvet and alone.

Jamieson had left his baby after the attack, and texted the mother: “I’m sorry for what I’ve done,” Swansea Crown Court heard. He also sent friends messages including: “I’m scared. I think I’ve killed someone,” and: “I’m going to be on the news.”

Jamieson, who had previously admitted the offence, was sentenced on Monday.

The court heard he said he had “snapped” and had thrown the baby at a television.

The baby was found by family following the text messages and Dyfed-Powys Police attended.

The court also heard the baby suffered a cut on their head and a bruised face, and was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A CT scan showed evidence of bleeding on the brain and a left skull fracture, as well as extensive bruising.

The baby will need lifelong care and support, the court heard.

In a victim impact statement, the baby’s mother, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, said her family’s life had changed forever.

“You’re nothing but a spiteful, disgusting person,” she said, referring to Jamieson, who did not attend court for sentencing.

“The impact on my child will last for the rest of my life.

“I’ll never understand what you were thinking. It doesn’t matter how long you’ll get because it will never be enough.”

Despite making an application to vacate his plea last year, permission was refused by Judge Paul Thomas KC.

He called Jamieson “a coward” who was “consumed by self-pity”.

“You threw the baby with great force at the television. It was a fit of uncontrolled temper.

“You did not even bother to check whether the baby was alive. It was an act of the most horrendous callousness and self-interest.

“The child has irreversible brain damage. You have no remorse, no regret, for what you did.”

Jamieson would have to serve two thirds of the sentence before being eligible to be released.
