Luke Shaw admitted Manchester United’s players must consider leaving as he issued a dejected apology to the club’s fans after their Europa League final defeat.

The stalwart said the squad must take responsibility for the failure and not shy away from what has been the club’s worst season since their relegation in 1973-74.

United’s hopes of salvaging their season were crushed in Bilbao on Wednesday night as Tottenham beat them 1-0 to lift a first trophy in 17 years.

Brennan Johnson’s scrappy first-half goal – which Shaw failed to prevent – condemned United to a first season without European football since 2014-15.

‘We’re very sorry for what they have had to go through this season. Like I said, it’s been nowhere near good enough, and I can only apologise for that,’ Shaw told BBC Sport.

‘I think we have to look at the positives and the only positive is that we can only go up from here.

‘We’re rock bottom now and we have to find the way to drag ourselves back.

‘I can say 100 per cent right now that [Ruben Amorim] is the right man. I know results have not been good at all.

‘I’ve been here for a long time now and I’ve been through different managers but Ruben, for me, I talk on my behalf and I’m sure I can talk on behalf of all the players, Ruben is 100 per cent the right manager to take us back where this club should be.’

Shaw could barely even look as he walked past the Europa League trophy after the game, covering his face.

But the left-back had almost equalised with a header in the dying moments of the game, but for a save from Guglielmo Vicario.

He added to TNT Sports: ‘The worst it possibly can. It’s so damaging. Obviously not just tonight but we know how big it what for the future, the things that come with winning the Europa League, the Champions League for next season, a lot.

‘It hurts a lot. This season has not been good enough. Us as players, we have to question if we’re good enough for Man United because this season is not acceptable.

‘Where we are in the league, the results we’ve had, it’s not acceptable for a club like Manchester United that has won multiple trophies and always been one of the biggest teams in the world.

‘At the moment we’re so far away from that. Us as players, we have to take responsibility for that because we’re the ones on the pitch that need to deliver.

‘Not just tonight, the whole season has been nowhere near good enough. It sounds a bit silly but I can only say sorry to the fans.

‘They deserve everything. To go through the season, to stay with us, to always be supporting us through a really tough and bad season, they’re always there, so I can only apologise to them for the season and just say thank you so much for the support. We do really appreciate it.

‘After results by this, the season we’ve had, we have to question ourselves. It’s about where we go from here. Ruben for sure has a plan. He knows exactly what’s needed at this club. He’ll turn it around.’

Amorim has offered to leave the Red Devils without compensation after presiding over a woeful campaign.

While this was their first European loss of the campaign, United sit 16th in the Premier League and have only won around a quarter of their domestic games under the Portuguese.

Captain Bruno Fernandes has also offered to leave if the club want to ‘cash in’ on.

It emerged earlier this month that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal are prepared to break the British transfer record and pay Fernandes close to £200million over a three-year contract following talks with his representatives.
