Alisson faces an extended spell on the sidelines as Liverpool are set to be without their first-choice goalkeeper for the FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City and both legs of the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazil goalkeeper, who missed the defeat to Brighton before the international break, has a muscle problem and Giorgi Mamardashvili will deputise in the next few weeks.

But Alexander Isak could make his first appearance of 2026 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday while Mohamed Salah is fit to return after he was not able to play at Brighton.

However, Alisson is absent again with head coach Arne Slot saying: “He will not be part of the Paris Saint-Germain game. He will be out for a bit longer. Towards the end of the season we expect him to be fit.”

Salah, who has announced he will leave at the end of the season, has only sat out one game and Slot added: “He trained with us yesterday [Thursday] and will train today and is available for the game.”

Isak has been out since December after breaking his leg immediately after scoring against Tottenham.

He underwent ankle surgery and Slot said it is too soon for him to begin the game against City, but that the £125m striker could make a cameo.

“It will definitely be too fast to expect him in the starting line-up,” he added. “He has trained with us yesterday for the first time and today will be the second time after exactly 101 days. It will take a bit of time to give him a lot of minutes but we will make sure we do the right thing in terms of building him up.”

Slot admitted the question of when to introduce Isak is complicated by the possibility of extra-time in the FA Cup.

“It is a difficult one because we don’t play a normal game,” he explained. “What I mean is it could go to extra time so that makes it even more complicated if we bring him in and we think he can only play 10 minutes and bring him on and then it goes to extra time.

“Of course, we can take him off again if we have enough players available. Maybe a few minutes but let’s wait and see how he is today, how he feels about it himself.”

Jeremie Frimpong came off in the Netherlands’ draw with Ecuador but while Slot expects his compatriot to be fit, he does not want to run the risk of losing the summer signing again.

He said: “As we know, we don’t have eight right-backs available.”
