After 20 years at the helm of Oklahoma State football, Mike Gundy has been fired as Cowboys head coach three games into the 2025 season.
Gundy’s legendary tenure in Stillwater comes to a close after Oklahoma State fell to 1-2 on the year with a loss to in-state rival Tulsa over the weekend.
The 58-year-old will earn $15million by being fired without cause, per his contract.
The Cowboys came into 2025 with low expectations and failed to attain those less-than-lofty standards.
Coming off a 3-9 season, Oklahoma State has failed to defeat an FBS team this season, with its only victory coming over UT Martin by 20.
The Cowboys were blown out by nationally ranked Oregon 69-3 earlier this month and have lost 11 straight games to FBS competition, dating back to the beginning of Big 12 play in 2024.

The Cowboys went winless in conference play last season, with Gundy entering 2025 on a hot seat for a coach who was once untouchable as a program legend.
In the hierarchy of football in the Sooner State, a loss to Tulsa while scoring 12 points was the final straw, despite Gundy believing he had plenty of fight left.
Gundy said he got ‘fair questions’ about his job security on Monday and said he ‘100 percent’ wanted to remain at the school beyond this season. Turns out, he had about 24 hours left as an employee of Oklahoma State.
‘I’m under contract, here, for I think 3 1/2 years,’ Gundy said Monday. ‘When I was hired here to take this job, ever since that day, I’ve put my heart and soul into this and I will continue to do that until at some point, if I say I don’t want to do it or if somebody else says we don’t want you to do it.’
