Framed by dramatic volcanic peaks and close to the calm waters of an Indian Ocean lagoon, this Flic en Flac resort offers standout Creole cuisine and characterful accommodation

Location

La Pirogue is located in the seaside town of Flic en Flac on the west coast of Mauritius, about an hour’s drive from the island’s international airport. From here, the coastline looks out toward the stunning Le Morne mountain, which dominates the island’s southwest peninsula. Once a sleepy fishing outpost, the spot is now a prime stretch of beachfront real estate and one of the most sought-after locations on the island.

The drive from the airport will take you past Hindu temples, mosques, churches and restaurants ranging from Chinese and Creole to Indian and French. The area is surrounded by volcanic mountains and lush greenery.

The vibe

From the moment you arrive at La Pirogue, you feel as though you’ve wandered into a tropical-themed fairytale. This is not a slick, ultra-minimalist resort. It leans into local character with volcanic rock and thatched roofed cottages that are shaped like the sails of a traditional pirogue boat, while winding paths take you through coconut groves.

In case you momentarily forget the paradise in which you’re lucky enough to be staying, the numerous illustrated “Beware of falling coconuts” signs serve as a mildly ominous reminder. When darkness hits, the resort swaps daytime lounging for charming evening entertainment that brings the beach to life with soulful local music and fire-lit Sega dancing.

Service

I found myself on excellent terms with the beachside crew, who were a reliable barometer for the resort’s true personality. They were genuine, welcoming and generous with their Mauritian hospitality, like all of the staff at the hotel. There’s a laidback sincerity to how they operate. They will get you a golf buggy you back to your room if you’re feeling lazy post-dinner or drop round a cocktail as you’re getting ready pre-dinner.

The team arranged a breakfast served on a wooden boat moored in the shallows. Dipping your toes in the water while sipping a cappuccino on deck is a brilliant, theatrical touch. But overall, the service is more about making you feel at home than wowing you with bells and whistles.

With 248 rooms and suites in total, the resort offers a range of accommodations, including garden bungalows facing the ocean and intimate beach pavilions. While none have a private pool, if you’re looking to go top end, the Duke of Edinburgh Suite comes with its own beach gazebo and 24-hour butler service.

All rooms are generous in size, comfortable and thoughtfully appointed. They offer all-important air conditioning and ceiling fans, speedy wifi and a tasteful mix of rustic and modern textures.

Bathrooms are spacious, with most offering a bath, separate walk-in shower and twin basins.

Food and drink

Dining here is heavily anchored in Creole heritage. At Wolmar, the open-plan buffet is a vibrant offering of international cooking stations. Opt for a Spanish omelette from the egg station alongside some freshly baked pastries for breakfast, and in the evening tuck into local delicacies including octopus stew with green papaya or authentic dry beef curry.

The standout for casual dining is the beachside Coconut Cafe, which dishes out authentic local street food alongside wood-fired pizzas right next to the infinity pool. If you want a break from the local rum infusions served under the thatched roof of the Medine Bar, the Van Der Stel Wine Bar is not to be missed.

It offers more than 60 different vintages by the glass, complete with a resident sommelier on hand to recommend the perfect pairing for an evening cheeseboard. Staying here also grants you a passport to dine at the upscale restaurants of sister resort Sugar Beach right next door.

At Wolmar, and across the whole resort, you’ll find options to suit most dietary requirements, from plant-based dishes to Halal, vegetarian, and vegan options.

Facilities

Wellness at La Pirogue centres around the nature-nested Glow Spa, which offers ancient massage rituals and an authentic hammam treatment. There’s also a gym and regular yoga classes to help you find your holiday rhythm.

On the waterfront, you can try kayaking, paddleboarding, glass-bottom boat rides or even sailing. For divers, the on-site Padi centre is a gateway to the coral-rich lagoon; and land lubbers benefit from excellent tennis courts and beach volleyball facilities.

For more gentle splashing about, La Pirogue has two outdoor swimming pools: a large central lagoon-style infinity pool, and a smaller dedicated children’s pool. Guests also have shared access to the pools at neighbouring Sugar Beach.

Family-friendly?

Absolutely. There’s the Sun Kids’ Club for children aged two to 11 (complimentary and open daily from 9:30am to 10pm) and the Teens’ Club, each running daily programmes. Family bungalows interconnect, offering both shared space and plenty of privacy.

Pet policy

The resort does not allow visitors to bring pets. If you’re travelling with a certified service animal you can contact the resort administration directly before booking in order to verify their specific accommodation rules.

Accessibility

The resort features four accessible rooms with adapted bathrooms featuring roll-in showers. In the wider grounds, the property provides accessible parking, step-free access to major facilities, lifts and flat paths to navigate the tropical gardens and beachside.

Check-in/check-out

Standard check-in at La Pirogue is from 2pm, and check-out is by 12 noon.

At a glance

Best thing: The beachfront bungalows. Somehow traditional and high-end, you feel like Robinson Crusoe if he’d washed ashore into the lap of a four-star luxury resort.

Perfect for: People looking for understated luxury with a mix of laidback beach time and water activities.

Not right for: Anyone looking for hyper-modern design or highly formal, white-glove service.

Instagram from: In the shallows of the lagoon by the hotel’s uncrowded stretch of beach, looking towards Le Morne.
