Shropshire Council has appointed Kier to deliver highways maintenance services for an additional year. This extends the contractor’s existing seven-year contract, that began in 2017, through to April 2026.
Kier is responsible for planned and responsive highways works and major projects across Shropshire, and provides streetlighting, flooding and drainage works – as well as maintenance of bridges, structures and winter maintenance.
As part of the contract, there is also an opportunity for Kier to be awarded two further 12-month extensions to take highways maintenance provision through to March 2028. The news follows Shropshire Council announcing the benefits of its award-winning mixed economy model – which sees some work being carried out by the council and larger-scale works continuing to be delivered by Kier.
The latest figures showed that a 66% drop in the cost to repair a pothole to Shropshire Council in the past four years – which is below the national average, and a reduction in the number of defects on A and B roads.

Shropshire Council now has far greater control and influence over services, with Kier focused on areas of strength and value for money which we welcome.”
