The Kansas City Chiefs have made the surprise decision to release veteran safety Mike Edwards, according to reports.
The 29-year-old is a two-time Super Bowl champion, having won the Vince Lombardi Trophy with both Tampa Bay and Kansas City.
He was part of the Chiefs team – alongside Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Co – that won a second straight Super Bowl in Las Vegas in 2023.
Edwards returned to Kansas City in April but on Tuesday, NFL Network reported that he is being released ahead of the 2025 campaign, which kicks off next week.
Teams must trim their active rosters down to a final 53 by 4pm ET on Tuesday and head coach Andy Reid has made the bold call to cut a seven-year NFL veteran ahead of the Chiefs’ season opener against the Chargers in Brazil on September 5.
Edwards was taken in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by Tampa Bay. The following season, he was part of the Buccaneers team – alongside Tom Brady – that beat the Chiefs to win Super Bowl LV.

Edwards remained in Tampa Bay until the 2023 season, when he moved to Kansas City. He then spent the 2024 campaign between the Bills and the Bucs before returning to the Chiefs this offseason.
‘Look at the organization,’ Edwards said earlier this month. ‘Anybody would be excited to play for this organization. So any time I get a chance to play here, I love it.’
The safety also talked up his hopes of becoming a leader following the departure of Justin Reid to the Saints.
‘I’m trying to take on that role now, wherever they may (need someone) to take on a leadership role,’ he said.
‘I feel like everybody can be a leader in that room but being an older guy, (I) try to take on that role (to) help out the young guys as much as possible.’
