After being cut by the Kansas City Chiefs late in the 2024 season, running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire has re-signed with the team as a member of their practice squad, according to multiple reports.
The former Super Bowl champion hasn’t started a game since 2023 and has been dealing with mental health issues for an extended period of time.
Last September, Edwards-Helaire was placed on the non-football injury list and missed multiple games as he continued to address his mental health.
In December, Edwards-Helaire was released by the Chiefs and signed with the New Orleans Saints. He played in two games and racked up 13 carries for 46 yards.
The running back, who the Chiefs took in the first round back in 2020, opened up in September about an ongoing battle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
‘Sometimes I’m admitted into the hospital, something I can’t stop throwing up and it’s just, I [don’t] know [anything] pretty much to stop it,’ Edwards-Helaire said. ‘Real bad dehydration … but it’s really just mentally just not being there.’

Edwards-Helaire has also took to social media about the topic at the time after he missed several training camp practices.
‘Living With PTSD is no small feat, its hard and very overwhelming [sic],’ Edwards-Helaire posted on X (formerly Twitter) last September.
‘Within the last month Ive Had many flare ups and the Amazing staff here at the #Chiefs have been helping me get through some tough times. I’ll be back rolling next Practice!’
Last August, Edwards-Helaire provided an exact date where he began experiencing PTSD – December 22, 2018 – but did not open up on further details other than to say he and a friend were in what he referred to as a ‘self-defense situation’.
While Edwards-Helaire was at LSU, he and a fellow teammate were trying to sell an electronic item when one of the two players shot an 18-year-old who was trying to rob them.
Police did not identify the players, but the Associated Press reported that one of them was Edwards-Helaire.
When he was released from the team, he thanked Chiefs Kingdom for their support.
‘Love ya KC! A family I didn’t know I needed, y’all made a kid from Baton Rouge dreams come true!,’ Edwards-Helaire posted to his X account.
‘To Chiefs Kingdom, it’s all love and the support I had in troubling times will forever be unmatched from you guys! With love!’
