Jurgen Klopp ‘couldn’t have been more disappointed’ by the boos directed at Trent Alexander-Arnold in his first appearance after announcing his decision to leave Liverpool.

The German revealed that he ‘switched the TV off’ when boos rang out around Anfield following the defender’s introduction against Arsenal earlier this month.

Klopp, who was appearing as a guest speaker at the LFC Foundation dinner at Liverpool Cathedral, urged Reds’ supporters to remember the 26-year-old’s contribution ahead of his final appearance this weekend before an expected move to Real Madrid.

‘I’m not saying don’t be disappointed but don’t forget what he’s done for this club,’ said Klopp, who held up a signed Alexander-Arnold shirt.

‘I heard the booing, I switched the TV off. I couldn’t have been more disappointed. This isn’t us.’

According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, the item was sold for £22,000 in the auction for the LFC Foundation.

Alexander-Arnold was given his chance in the Liverpool first team by Klopp and was a crucial member of the side that ended the club’s 30-year wait for a top-flight title.

On Friday, current boss Arne Slot expressed his hope that Alexander-Arnold gets the ‘reception he deserves’ in his farewell match.

The Reds finish the season at Anfield against Crystal Palace on Sunday, which will conclude with Virgil van Dijk lifting the Premier League trophy.

It will likely be an emotional fixture for Alexander-Arnold, who will end a 20-year association with the Anfield club.

During Monday’s defeat to Brighton, Alexander-Arnold appeared distant as he stood with his hands on his hips as Liverpool players applauded their fans post-match.

Some Liverpool fans suggested the academy graduate may have been regretting his decision to leave his boyhood club. Speaking to the BBC, Slot said he hopes that he could influence fans ahead of their final match to ensure Alexander-Arnold receives a warm send off.

‘I hope the same for every other player that contributed to us winning the league, that they will get the reception every player deserves,’ Slot said.

‘All have worked so hard, not only this season, but throughout their careers to achieve something like this. They did this for themselves, but partly also driven by our fans.

‘It would be fantastic, if it’s only going to be a positive moment for everyone at the club, and Trent is part of that.

‘I hope I can influence them, but they have their own opinion as well.’

Should Alexander-Arnold feature against Crystal Palace on Sunday, he would be making his 354th appearance for the club.

Alexander-Arnold has scored 23 goals and provided 92 assists to date for the club.

The full back has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold will pick up his second Premier League winners’ medal on Sunday.
