Former Premier League star Joey Barton is reportedly facing financial ruin after a disastrous string of failed court cases left him with a legal bill estimated to be as high as £1 million.

Barton remains behind bars on remand after being refused bail yesterday over a golf club brawl that left him facing GBH charges.

His mounting legal woes come as he reels from a massive financial hit, having been ordered to pay significant damages for his ‘vile’ online attacks against Jeremy Vine and Eni Aluko.

The disgraced star has been ordered to cough up £339,000 for his ‘sick’ comparison of pundit Eni Aluko to mass murderer Rose West. The massive damages order was handed down just this month.

The one-time £45,000-a-week star’s empire is also crumbling under a mountain of debt.

New figures show his firm, Joey Barton Promotions Limited, is £76,273 in the red, while his energy consultancy, Resolve Energy, is plagued by £1.8 million in outstanding loans.

It marks a disastrous financial run for Barton, who was also ‘hammered’ by the taxman after investing in four discredited film schemes designed to dodge tax.

The broadcaster Jeremy Vine, 60, confirmed the financial toll of their legal battle, stating that the failed defence of his social media posts cost Barton an estimated £600,000.

The Radio 2 presenter sued after being targeted with defamatory labels on X, resulting in a suspended sentence for Barton last year.

The BBC Radio 2 presenter, 60, sued over posts on X falsely calling him ‘nonce’ and a ‘paedo defender’.

Barton’s legal team is moving to appeal the Vine and Aluko verdicts, alongside a separate suspended sentence for assaulting his wife, Georgia, 38, in South-West London.

As his financial empire crumbles, Barton remains physically restricted, currently held on remand following an alleged assault at a Liverpool golf club. Co-defendant Gary O’Grady, 50, is on bail.

Sam Allardyce famously gambled £5.8 million to sign Barton from Manchester City following his violent exit for assaulting teammate Ousmane Dabo.
