Jey Uso reveals pitch to work with The Rock in WWE – and explains how he found out from Triple H that he had earned shock Royal Rumble win

Jey Uso has revealed his plans to work with The Rock in the future – and that the chance to do battle with him on the microphone is what draws him to the idea.

Uso is one of the most popular stars in WWE right now, coming out of the shadows of being Roman Reigns’ right hand man in The Bloodline and a tag team wrestler with brother Jimmy to become a singles star.

This is the biggest year of his career on that front. At the start of February, Uso was one of the most surprising winners of the Royal Rumble of all time, eliminating John Cena last to book a world title match at WrestleMania.

There, he will take on Gunther. The two have enjoyed quite the rivalry since the decision was made, and it will come to a head on either April 19 or 20 at ‘Mania.

Another huge star in the company is The Rock. A mainstream name, his WWE career has been revived with a new ‘Final Boss’ character, which has seen him join forces with John Cena of late.

The Rock and Uso, alongside the likes of Reigns, Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa, are family. The Hollywood star is the uncle of Uso, and, speaking exclusively to Mail Sport, the latter revealed his aims of working with the Great One.

‘He was busy too, but we always running,’ Uso said on whether The Rock congratulated him on winning the Royal Rumble. ‘I got tired of hugging. I was blown up more hugging after than in the Rumble itself.

‘I want to get in there. I would like to go toe to toe in a promo with him. I know The Rock is good like that but I feel like I’m new school with mine, I’m really in it. I’m really out there like that.

‘Rock is very believable. He can be entertaining and all that, but I feel like I can bring some different kind of emotions from The Rock – family always hit different. I didn’t know I could do it with Roman, with my brothers, so I would like to test those waters.’

WWE fans were left shocked when Uso kicked Cena onto the floor at the Rumble to win the match and etch his name into history. ‘In a bad way too. I know what you’re talking about,’ he says of the mixed reaction.

For the first time, though, he has opened up fully on how he found out he would be the man to claim victory. It came from a meeting, where he was sat with Cena, Logan Paul, and CM Punk, when his name was called.

‘I didn’t find out till the day of,’ he said. ‘They just sit down whoever is the last four.

‘We’ll have this group meeting, then, “Right, last four, stay”. They call out the last four, I’m in the four, I’m like, “Oh damn”. Then they’ll tell me right there, “You know, we’re going to go with Jey”. ‘I’m Just looking around like, “Yeah”.

‘I’m freaking out to the whole day, but it’s a good thing, it’s great, it’s good pressure to get put on you that day. And also moving forward, I’m just excited, because that’s a great title accolade to have under your belt, as a wrestler, and for me.

‘I have hit so many new things that I never thought I’d even scratch the surface on, but I’m the 2025 Royal Rumble winner now. I bet last year people would have never picked me. They didn’t pick me this year, but I just love this ride I’m on, and every week it changes.

‘I show up to work just ready to go. Whatever I’ve got to do, I’m going do it, and I feel like they see the hard work. I feel like Hunter (Triple H) knows. I bled for this, and he’s seen it because he went through it too, and he gave me this opportunity, and I’m just not going let anybody down.’

Gunther exclusively told Mail Sport last month that he did not want to face Uso at WrestleMania. It felt real. They have already wrestled each other a number of times.

But the programme is good. It is a true hero versus villain-style rivalry, with crowds their loudest when Uso is in the ring.

He is already a WrestleMania main-eventer. But that was with his brother in a tag team title match. Now, he is riding solo. And he wants to make the most of it.

‘WrestleMania, night one or night two, whichever match I’m on. I don’t care if I’m on last, I don’t care if I open it up,’ he said. ‘I’m going to go out there and they’re going to remember my match, so that’s all I’m focused on.

‘This is a once in a lifetime shot. That’s how I’m looking at it, because this might not ever, ever come back around in my career.’
