Jason Tindall said Eddie Howe was able to watch Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Manchester United from hospital and sent him a congratulatory message on full-time.
However, there was no update on the health of the head coach, who was admitted on Friday night after feeling unwell during the week and has been undergoing tests over the weekend.
Tindall confirmed that Howe played no part in preparations, and it appears likely he will still be in charge for Wednesday’s visit of Crystal Palace.
The assistant boss said: ‘I’ve just seen a message from him congratulating the performance. He managed to watch the game. I’ve not had any contact for a couple of days other than the one message.
‘I think the team probably picked itself with recent performances, but when he was ill and he was unable to be here, he put his trust in myself and the rest of the support staff to go out and deliver the performance.
‘He was taken into hospital on Friday evening and was poorly, and from that moment on it was very unlikely that he would be here to lead the team today.

Bruno Guimaraes dedicated the victory to Howe, hoping it will ‘give him a little bit of happiness’
‘He was hugely missed, certainly for me. It’s only the second time in 17 years that we’ve not been side by side, and I did miss him.
‘You miss your leader when he’s not there, but testament and credit to everybody else to be able to step into those shoes – it’s big shoes to fill.
‘He’s one of the best around and credit to everybody to be able to go out and deliver the performance that they did. I’m sure he’ll be proud of that.
‘He means the world to myself, the rest of the staff and my players, and the sooner he’s better and able to come back to work the better.’
Newcastle released a statement on Saturday saying that Howe was ‘conscious and talking’ in hospital and there has been no further update.
Captain Bruno Guimaraes dedicated the win to Howe, saying: ‘When we went to the pitch we said we want to play for him. He has been unbelievable for us. Hopefully this win will give him a little bit of happiness. We want to see him back for the next game.’
Harvey Barnes, who scored twice at St James’ Park, added: ‘He’s on the road to recovery hopefully. We knew we had a job to do without him and we did that.’
