Jamie Carragher fires four-word dig to rub salt into Man United wounds after Europa League final defeat

Jamie Carragher has poked fun at Manchester United with a four-word dig on the back of their Europa League final loss.

United hit what would have felt like rock bottom as they fell to a 1-0 defeat by Tottenham, who claimed their first trophy in 17 years in an all-or-nothing final for both sides.

They will now be without European football next season and could finish as low as 17th in the Premier League table this term, capping off a dire campaign that will now also end trophyless.

Carragher took aim at former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with his social media post. It was famed that during his time as United boss the Scot would motivate his players by telling them: ‘Lads, it’s Tottenham.’

Liverpool legend Carragher has now aimed a dig back, taking aim at the former United boss.

‘Lads, it’s Man United!’ the former Reds defender wrote on social media.

It was Roy Keane who revealed the iconic phrase Ferguson coined.

‘I thought I knew what the group might need, that we didn’t need a big team talk,’ Keane said in 2014. ‘It was Tottenham at home. I thought, please don’t go on about Tottenham, we all know what Tottenham is about, they are nice and tidy but we’ll f***ing do them.

‘He came in and said: “Lads, it’s Tottenham”, and that was it. Brilliant.’

Spurs have, though, now beaten United four times this season, with the final victory the most significant by a long way.

‘It feel derogatory to speak about a club like that,’ former United man Paul Scholes said of the words from his former manager on TNT Sports punditry. ‘We knew we had the beating of them most of the time.

‘We were always confident, there was a lot of talk about it being only Tottenham but it isn’t now.’

Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, added: ‘I don’t think he was disrespectful. His approach might have been less focused if I am being polite but it was a way to make us feel superior.

‘He had unique ways of doing it against different teams.’

According to Kieran Maguire, television money will go down by £70million, matchday money down £25m and commercial down £25m.

That could lead to fewer signings or signings of a lower calibre in the summer. Ruben Amroim, meanwhile, has said he will leave without compensation if asked.

‘If the board and the fans feel I am not the right guy I will go tomorrow with no compensation,’ he said after the game. ‘But I will not quit.’
