- British No 1 Jack Draper triumphed in straight sets to win his first Masters title
- His mum snubbed a phone call from him while she was live on BBC Radio Surrey
- The 23-year-old athlete has admitted his next goal is to win a Grand Slam title
British tennis star Jack Draper was hilariously snubbed by his own mother while she was live on BBC Radio on Monday.
Draper, 23, claimed the biggest win of his career on Sunday night by triumphing in straight sets over Holger Rune, clinching the first Masters 1000 title of his career at Indian Wells.
His mother, Nicky, joined BBC Radio Surrey on Monday morning to talk about the incredible achievement — and revealed she had quickly declined a call from Draper on her mobile midway through her time on the station.
Draper’s dominant victory finished just after 3pm local time, with the California time zone seven hours behind UK time.
‘He’s very good, he always calls me and we have a chat,’ Nicky, 55, said on Monday morning. ‘In fact, I’ve just declined his call now!
‘I was a little bit distracted and I saw he was calling me, I’ve just declined him. I guess he’s just going to bed.’

Draper flies to Florida later this week in an effort to win the Sunshine Double at the Miami Open
Feeling they may have missed an excellent opportunity, BBC Radio Surrey’s host asked whether there could be scope to get Draper on with Nicky in a three-way conversation over the phone.
But she quickly thought better of it, joking the new world No 7 may have been ‘celebrating’ too much for a radio interview.
‘I would have thought he has had a bit of a celebration tonight,’ she added.
‘I hope so, I hope him and his team have actually let their hair down a little bit because it’s all very focused.’
As reported by Mail Sport on Monday, Draper has had to put his Indian Wells celebrations on hold.
The 23-year-old will fly to Florida this week to begin his attempt to do the so-called Sunshine Double at the Miami Open.
‘Maybe I’ll have a drink on you guys,’ he joked to a small group of British journalists after his Indian Wells victory.

As a result, Draper has been forced to put celebrations for the biggest win of his career on hold

Now with a taste of success, the 23-year-old has set his sights on winning Grand Slam titles
‘I’ll go out for a meal with my team – I definitely won’t be going to the Nest (a notorious nightclub in Palm Springs).’
While winning the Miami Open would be another sensational achievement, Draper’s next goal in his career is winning an elusive Grand Slam title.
Speaking on his hope of winning either the US Open, French Open, Australian Open or Wimbledon one day, he added: ‘It’s something I’m working towards. It’s different in the Slams, it’s five sets, but I’m definitely believing more and more I can compete consistently against top players in the world. I feel like I belong completely.
‘It’s a huge goal of mine to win a Slam but I know to get there all I have to do is keep on working, keep on believing in myself. I definitely believe I’m going to have the chance to hopefully be on that big stage.’
