Jack Doohan, the son of legendary 500cc racer Mick Doohan, has joined Haas as a reserve driver for the upcoming Formula 1 season.

Gold Coast raised Doohan, formerly on the books of Alpine, will be the reserve driver at the American-owned Haas outfit alongside Ryo Hirakawa.

The 23-year-old said Haas was the ‘ideal place’ to continue his career.

‘I would like to thank the team for giving me the opportunity to grow and take on the great challenge of 2026 together. I’m eager to begin working with the team and collaborating on a successful season,’ he said.

Doohan, whose father Mick is a five-time 500cc motorcycle world champion, carved a successful career in Formula 3 and Formula 2 before being Alpine’s permanent reserve driver and impressing team principal Oliver Oakes.

He was runner-up in the 2021 F3 championship and finished third in the F2 ranks in 2023, when he notched six wins and five pole positions.

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said he was ‘very excited’ to have Doohan part of his team given his vast experience.

‘The dedication required to remain sharp and prepared to race while getting to know how the team works and so on, it’s challenging for any driver – especially one who’s obviously still very keen to race again at this level,’ he said.

‘I’ve enjoyed getting to know Jack and we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the team and benefiting from his contributions.’

Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman will continue as the main drivers for Haas.

Doohan began kart racing aged nine in a go-kart gifted to him by Michael Schumacher, winning multiple national titles.

His best finish last season was 13th at the Chinese Grand Prix.

The F1 season begins on March 8 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
