Ireland 0-0 New Zealand, 2 mins

Beauden Barrett absolutely demolishes a kick miles down the field from his own 22. And Ireland’s lineout creaks immediately.

Sheehan with a messy throw that bounces off Furlong’s hands (surely targeting him wasn’t the plan) and that’s first blood New Zealand. Sheehan then pinged for not rolling away, so the All Blacks are into the Ireland 22…

Jack Crowley gets fly half nod

The Jack Crowley/Sam Prendergast debate looks set to continue for a while yet, with the Munsterman installed at No 10 today after starting the season in impressive URC form. A 31-18 win at Croke Park over the Dublin club felt like a real statement from some of the Munster squad a fortnight ago, coming only days after Andy Farrell named a Leinster-heavy selection ahead of the autumn – but that level of competition is surely only a good thing. Neither Crowley nor Prendergast is the finished article but the 25-year-old has responded well to the challenge provided by his younger rival, and he gets a huge opportunity to steer the ship in Chicago today.

A familiar foe

It’ll be fun to watch Jordie Barrett up against some close chums tonight, the New Zealand centre relatively fresh from his stint at Leinster last season. He’ll have a little bit of inside knowledge on the healthy contingent from the club in the Irish squad, and they him, of course.

Rieko Ioane doesn’t make the All Blacks squad today with the centre set to move to Dublin at the end of this autumn – Ioane remains a valuable figure to Scott Robertson with his ability to cover the wing but there is a sense that Quinn Tupaea, Billy Proctor and Leicester Fainga’anuku are just squeezing ahead in the pecking order.

Caelan Doris in ‘great nick’ to return from the bench for Ireland – Andy Farrell

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell says captain Caelan Doris is in “great nick” following a six-month injury absence and will be disappointed not to start today’s clash with New Zealand in Chicago.

Leinster back-rower Doris is poised to return to action from the bench at Soldier Field, having not played since undergoing surgery on a shoulder issue suffered on 3 May.

With the 27-year-old among the replacements, Jack Conan and Ryan Baird start at number eight and blindside flanker respectively, while hooker Dan Sheehan will skipper the side.

Team news – Ireland

Regular captain Caelan Doris makes his return from injury from the bench for Ireland, with the No 8 set to play his first minutes of the season after missing the British and Irish Lions tour following shoulder surgery. Dan Sheehan skippers the side in his stead.

With Bundee Aki also given a bench role, Stuart McCloskey lines up in midfield outside of Jack Crowley, who is preferred to Sam Prendergast at fly half. Prop Paddy McCarthy, younger brother of absent lock Joe, is set to debut as a replacement.

Ireland XV: 1 Andrew Porter, 2 Dan Sheehan (capt.), 3 Tadhg Furlong; 4 James Ryan, 5 Tadhg Beirne; 6 Ryan Baird, 7 Josh van der Flier, 8 Jack Conan; 9 Jamison Gibson-Park, 10 Jack Crowley; 11 James Lowe, 12 Stuart McCloskey, 13 Garry Ringrose, 14 Tommy O’Brien; 15 Jamie Osborne.

Replacements: 16 Ronan Kelleher, 17 Paddy McCarthy, 18 Finlay Bealham, 19 Iain Henderson, 20 Caelan Doris; 21 Craig Casey, 22 Sam Prendergast, 23 Bundee Aki.
