Welsh government launches £250,000 challenge to design nature-inspired remote health spaces

The Welsh Government has launched a new innovation challenge inviting businesses and academic partners to design sustainable, nature-inspired health spaces that improve access to care across Wales – particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Up to five projects will each receive up to £50,000 (inc. VAT) in Phase 1 funding to co-create prototypes of flexible, moveable healthcare pods. These must integrate market-ready digital technologies, enhance accessibility, and align with NHS Wales standards. Phase 1 focuses on feasibility and co-design with citizens. Attendance at the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham (2 – 9 August 2025) to showcase designs is required.

Successful Phase 1 applicants may be invited to apply for Phase 2 funding to build and test a demonstrator unit with clinical functions, secure data transfer, and face-to-face video consultations.

The challenge supports ‘A Healthier Wales’ strategy and requires evidence of user engagement, clear commercialisation plans, and alignment with Welsh language and accessibility standards.

Deadline and details

Full challenge details, supplementary information and application forms are available on the SBRI Centre of Excellence website.

The competition closes for applications on 6 June 2025.

Potential applicants can join a virtual briefing event on Friday 16 May 2025 at 1230pm.
