Map showing the amber and yellow warning areas

The Met Office has put in place an amber warning for snow covering much of Shropshire for the period 8pm Thursday (8 January) to 9am Friday (9 January).

A yellow warning for snow covering some other areas of Shropshire is also in place from 5pm Thursday to 12noon Friday.

The below information is correct as of 2.45pm on Thursday 8 January.

Gritting

Our gritters will be out across the county as required treating our primary gritting routes – all A and B roads across the county plus local high risk sites. See which roads will be treated on our website.

Waste and recycling

This week’s wintry weather has caused some disruption to recycling and waste collections.

Our crews have been out across Shropshire today and are focusing on collecting recycling and general waste – including any collections that couldn’t be made earlier this week due to the weather.

We’ll provide an update tomorrow (Friday) about what impact the expected snow may have on collections.

School closures

If a school has informed us that they’ll be closed tomorrow due to the expected snow, they’ll be listed on our website.

In most cases schools will also contact parents and carers direct. If you have any questions please contact your school.

School transport

Due to the warning of heavy snow there will be no school transport tomorrow (Friday). There will also be no SEND school transport, Even if a school is open transport won’t be operating.

Transport to adult day centres will also be suspended on Friday.

Passenger transport

Some local bus services may be cancelled or have route restrictions – follow this link for details. We strongly advise all passengers to check the latest updates before travelling, as the situation may change at short notice depending on weather conditions.

Operator websites (see Bus operator contacts | Shropshire Council) and the Connect On-Demand app will have the most current information.

Advice about how you can look after yourself and others.

Help to protect vulnerable people that you know including older people, those with underlying conditions and those who live alone; they may need support with food and medical supplies. If you are worried about your health or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.

If you or someone you know is isolated due to snow, follow these simple steps to keep safe and well. Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night; turn off electrical heaters and put out your fire before going to bed; ensure pets are safe by keeping them warm and comfortable; prevent frozen pipes by opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing; stay indoors, wrap up warm, and close internal doors to keep the heat in.

Be prepared for a power cut. Make sure you have torches and batteries and, if possible, a mobile phone power pack. Remember, gas boilers and hobs, heat pumps, internet and phones won’t work without power. To report a power cut call 105, a free number that connects you to your local network operator in Great Britain.

Advice about staying safe in the snow

The Met Office website offers some helpful advice and information for staying safe in the snow, including:

  • What to do if you need to drive somewhere
  • Driving safely in snow
  • Thinking ahead and acting now so that you can cope if cut off
  • Staying safe if you are cut off
  • What you can do in a power cut.
