Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson ruled out of Cardinals game after suffering freak injury in warmups

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has been ruled out of their game against the Arizona Cardinals after suffering an bizarre injury during warmups.

Just hours before their game on Sunday, the Colts confirmed that Richardson had been named as QB3 and would not be featuring at the Lucas Oil Stadium.

However, the manner of the injury is what had fans talking, with reports claiming that he hurt his eye while doing pregame warmup work with stretching bands.

The Colts also confirmed that Riley Leonard will backup Daniel Jones against the Cardinals, with Richardson set to watch from the sidelines.

Shortly after confirming Richardson’s injury, the Colts then revealed that cornerback Charvarius Ward had suffered a concussion in warmups and was also out.

The Colts also put wide receiver Adonai Mitchell on the active list for the game against the Cardinals, despite the fact he was not on their injury report.

Thankfully for the Colts, the injury to Richardson isn’t going to derail their plans.

Richardson was selected by the Colts as the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft but has struggled to live up to expectation and lost his starting role to Jones in summer.

And Jones hasn’t any reason for his coaches to question that. He’s lead the Colts to a 4-1 start to the season, completing 107 of his 150 attempted passes for 1290 yards and throwing six touchdowns.

The injury to Richardson is just the latest in a long list of quarterback injuries during the early stages of the NFL season – with the Cardinals also affected.

On Saturday afternoon, Arizona confirmed that QB Kyler Murray will not play in Indianapolis due to a foot problem and veteran Jacob Brissett will start in his place.

The Cardinals (2-3) promoted undrafted quarterback Kedon Slovis to the active roster, but it wasn’t until Saturday evening that reports surfaced about Murray’s expected absence against the 4-1 Colts.

Officially listed as ‘questionable,’ Murray missed practice Wednesday and Thursday due to the foot injury before taking part on a limited basis on Friday.

Murray hadn’t missed a game since 2023.

The first pick of the 2019 NFL Draft has struggled this season. Currently the Cardinals rank 30th in the league with 170.2 passing yards per game, while the 28-year-old Murray has tossed six touchdowns and three picks.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo was first to report the promotion of Slovis, a native Arizonan who suited up for USC and Pittsburgh before transferring to BYU, where he went 5-3 while throwing for a dozen touchdowns and six interceptions.

Fortunately for Arizona, Brissett is an experienced backup, albeit one who hasn’t thrown 100 passes in a season since 2022.

The former North Carolina State star is 19-34 in his career, although his 1.4-percent interception rate is actually the lowest in NFL history.
