India’s T20 World Cup-winning cricket squad has been awarded a staggering bonus of 1.31 billion rupees (£12.2 million) by the country’s cricket board, a sum six times greater than the prize money they secured for lifting the trophy.

The historic third men’s T20 World Cup title was clinched by India with a dominant 96-run victory over New Zealand in a one-sided final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, earning them $2.34 million (£1.8 million) for the tournament win.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), recognised as the world’s wealthiest cricket board, announced the additional reward for the team.

This substantial bonus is approximately $3 million higher than the tournament’s overall prize pot of $11.25 million (£8.8 million).

“The Board congratulates the players, support staff and selectors once again on this historic achievement and wishes them continued success in the future,” the BCCI stated.

Last year, the BCCI similarly rewarded the Champions Trophy-winning Indian team with a $6.72 million (£5.1 million) cash bonus, three times the $2.24 million (£1.7 million) they received for that title.

With India now three-time T20 World Cup champions, captain Suryakumar Yadav has already set the team’s sights on their next major objective: securing a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Cricket is set to return to the Olympics in two years’ time, and India look set to be favourites for the competition thanks to their recent form in white-ball cricket.

They have now won the last two T20 World Cups, while also coming out on top in last year’s Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup.

India will get the chance to complete their collection of white-ball trophies at the 50-over World Cup next year, which is set to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
