Air raid sirens and multiple blasts have been heard in the city of Jammu in Indian-administered Kashmir, with residents reporting explosions and red flashes from projectiles in the sky.
India has accused Pakistan of attempting a drone attack, while Islamabad has said it has shot down drones launched from India, as tensions soared between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
India has acknowledged that it targeted Pakistan’s air defense system, and Islamabad said it shot down several of the drones. India said it “neutralized” Pakistan’s attempts to hit military targets.
The back and forth came a day after Indian missiles struck several locations in Pakistan, killing 31 civilians, according to Pakistani officials. New Delhi said it was retaliating after gunmen killed 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists, in India-controlled Kashmir last month.
Pakistan claims it has killed “40-50 soldiers” by shelling Indian military installations along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in Kashmir, in retaliation for Wednesday’s pre-dawn airstrikes by India. At least 16 civilians and an Indian soldier were killed in heavy shelling in India’s Poonch district, Indian police said.
Pakistan said it downed 25 Indian kamikaze drones, while India said it shot down 15 missiles. Also on Thursday, French officials said at least one Indian-owned Rafale fighter jet was shot down during Wednesday’s “Operation Sindoor”.
Pakistan’s Chinese-made jet brought down two Indian fighter aircraft, US officials say
A top Chinese-made Pakistani fighter shot down at least two Indian military aircraft on Wednesday, two U.S. officials told Reuters, marking a major milestone for Beijing’s advanced fighter jet.
One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was high confidence that Pakistan had used the Chinese-made J-10 aircraft to launch air-to-air missiles against Indian fighter jets – bringing down at least two.
Another official said at least one Indian jet that was shot down was a French-made Rafale fighter aircraft.
Delhi has not acknowledged the loss of any of its planes and instead said it carried out successful strikes against what it said was “terrorist” infrastructure inside Pakistan.
In France, Rafale manufacturer Dassault Aviation and the MBDA consortium, which makes the Meteor air-to-air missile, could not immediately be reached for comment on a public holiday.

Amnesty International condemns ‘senseless loss’ of civilian lives
Amnesty International has condemned the “senseless loss” of civilian lives, stating that it wil achieve “neither security nor justice”.
“Amnesty International calls on the governments of India and Pakistan to uphold their obligations under both international human rights and humanitarian law,” the organisation said in a statement.
“They must take all necessary measures to protect civilians and minimize any suffering and casualties in both countries. As forces from both countries are now engaged in open hostilities, Amnesty International insists that neither security nor justice will be achieved with the senseless loss of more civilian lives.”
It added: We unequivocally condemn the deliberate targeting and unlawful killing of civilians by armed groups during the horrific attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on 22nd April and call for an independent, transparent and thorough investigation to bring the suspected perpetrators of the atrocity to account through fair trials, without recourse to the death penalty.”

Twins, 12, among those killed in Indian border town in Pakistani shelling: ‘We are paying with our blood’
Clutching their father’s hand, 12-year-old twins Zain and Zoya tried to escape Pakistan’s nighttime shelling in Poonch, a town caught in the crossfire after India launched a number of missiles across the border on Wednesday to avenge the 26 civilians killed last month in the Himalayan tourist haven of Pahalgam.
Zain and Zoya’s family was trying to escape the border town to a safer place after they heard a loud explosion close to their house. They had barely stepped outside when another explosion tore through the street. Their uncle, Adil Pathan, witnessed the children’s last moments as they got caught in the second blast.
“They came (to the world) together and they died together. One of them took their last breaths in my arms before I put them in my car and rushed my sister and brother-in-law to safety,” Pathan tells The Independent.
Pakistan’s attack in Poonch has left a trail of devastation, with homes shattered and families torn apart in the border town that never saw it coming, Shweta Sharma and Mohammad Dawood report.
