Arthur Smith is reportedly turning down offers from NFL teams to become the next offensive coordinator of the Ohio State Buckeyes. 

Smith has held the same job with the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years, helping Aaron Rodgers and the team into the playoffs this season before they were eliminated in the first round by the Houston Texans. 

Following Mike Tomlin’s departure from the Steelers after 19 seasons earlier this month, 43-year-old Smith’s future has been uncertain. 

And on the same day the Steelers hired Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, insiders are now revealing Smith will move into college football.

That comes despite multiple NFL teams holding an interest in speaking to Smith about their head coach and offensive coordinator vacancies.

Smith received interest from the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans for their head coach positions. He was also up for at least one offensive coordinator in the league.

Before his spell with the Steelers, Smith was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. The team finished 7-10 in all three of his seasons in charge before he was fired in 2024. 

Smith will join Ryan Day’s Buckeyes, who were crowned national champions 12 months ago but were eliminated by the Miami Hurricanes in the quarter-finals this time around.

He will have the chance to work with Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Julian Sayin and exciting wide receiver prospect Jeremiah Smith, as well as running back Bo Jackson.

Last offseason, Day managed to persuade another NFL coach – Matt Patricia – to take the job of his team’s defensive coordinator. Patricia won three Super Bowls on Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots staff.
