Ian Wright admitted that his ‘heart went funny’ while watching Arsenal Women’s Champions League triumph.

Wright was in attendance in Lisbon as Arsenal Women beat Barcelona 1-0 to win the Champions League for the first time in 18 years.

Substitute Stina Blackstenius was the hero as she scored the only goal of the game.

Wright, who has frequently shown his support for women’s football, expressed his delight after Arsenal’s success was confirmed.

However, he admitted that he found the match difficult to watch at times.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Wright said: ‘I can’t believe it. This is the first time I’ve watched a game where my heart went funny. When we scored I was like ‘Oh my God, this is happening’.

‘I’m delighted for them. Nobody gave us a chance really especially after the last couple of games. I was worried for them with the amount of goals that they’ve conceded.’

Wright praised the whole Arsenal team for their performance, including Leah Williamson and Steph Catley in defence.

He said: ‘But today Leah, Steph at the back, everybody. They all did the job that needed to be done and that’s what it needed against Barcelona.’

‘In the end I think they didn’t turn and you have to take advantage of that and beat them’.

Wright also commented on how the introduction of Blackstenius gave Arsenal an extra edge.

He said: ‘Once Stina came on we knew we could threaten them and stretch them out there’.

Wright added that the success of the women’s team has saved Arsenal from ’embarrassment’ after the men’s side were unable to win any silverware this campaign.

He said: ‘It’s saved the club, the embarrassment of not getting anything this season when we played so well in the men. The ladies saved the club’.
