Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat to the pro-EU Tisza party in a pivotal election set to herald in a new era of relations between Hungary and Europe.

Opponent and Tisza leader Peter Magyar said that Orban had phoned him to congratulate the party for winning the election on Sunday, 12 April.

Accusations of voter fraud were launched by both sides on election day but Orban’s team in the nationalist Fidesz party said it will respect the results of the election.

Orban, a staunch ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin, has drawn widespread criticism across Europe for his support for the invasion of Ukraine.

Tisza party supporters took to the streets of Budapest to celebrate a historic victory alongside the newly elected Magyar.
