The Houston Texans have parted ways with quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, according to reports.

Johnson had been in the role for three seasons, having joined in 2023 when DeMeco Ryans became head coach.

He had been charged with overseeing the development of CJ Stroud, whom he had met when the quarterback was in high school.

However, after the Texans failed to reach the Super Bowl, being eliminated by the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs, the team and Johnson have split, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The split was reportedly mutual, with both Johnson and the Texans’ offensive staff wanting to move on.

Senior offensive assistant and pass game specialist Jerry Schuplinski is now expected to step into the role, adding to his responsibilities.

The move raises eyebrows, given Johnson was said to have been among the candidates to receive a second interview amid the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator vacancy. The team ultimately went with Sean Mannion.

It also comes just over a year after the Texans also parted ways with another key member of the offensive staff in coordinator Bobby Slowik in January 2025.

Stroud has one more year remaining on his rookie contract, followed by fifth-year option for 2027, which the team must pick up by May.

However, the franchise quarterback has seen a drop in his productivity over the past couple of years.

The young signal caller threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns to five interceptions in 15 starts in 2023.

Yet, in 31 appearances over the past two seasons, he has 39 touchdowns and 20 interceptions while averaging 218.3 yards per contest.

Stroud threw a staggering four interceptions during the Texans’ divisional loss to the New England Patriots.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio stood by Stroud during the NFL Combine earlier this week.

Caserio insisted that Stroud is ‘not going anywhere,’ as he branded the trade rumors surrounding the signal caller ‘moronic.’

Meanwhile, Stroud also reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise following the end of the season.

‘I want to be here for as long as I can. I love the city of Houston,’ Stroud said last month. ‘It really hurts me. I wish it didn’t go that way. My intent was to go out there and ball.’
