A horse has died at Cheltenham races after collapsing yards after the finishing line.
Seven-year-old Typhoon Flyer, trained by Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, finished sixth in the Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle on Wednesday before slumping after the finish.
The news was confirmed by ITV Racing, who posted on social media: ‘Some sad news to bring you, Typhoon Flyer collapsed after finishing the Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle, he was attended to by the veterinary team at Cheltenham, but sadly couldn’t be saved.
‘Our thoughts are with connections at this time.’
The 6-1 third favourite in the 2.05 race, Typhoon Flyer enjoyed a brilliant rub and led for much of the contest. However, he was overtaken before Cheltenham’s famous run-in and struggled to the finish.
The race was was won by Nicky Henderson’s 11-4 favourite East India Express under Freddie Gordon.

Typhoon Flyer was in his third outing of the year, having ran at Sandown in January and Haydock last month. He achieved creditable third and first-place finishes with jockey Luke Scott onboard.
Wednesday’s race began in chaotic fashion as the starter raised his flag with the runners a long way from the tape.
Cheltenham Festival was dogged by false starts, with a number of races having to be reset.
